The National Center on Family Homelessness, founded in 1988, is the nation’s foremost authority on family homelessness, and the only national organization dedicated solely to helping homeless families. The organization conducts state-of-the-art research, develop and share innovative solutions, and create public awareness about the special needs of homeless families. Our mission is to end family homelessness in America.

Homeless families have lost more than their homes, regardless of whether they became homeless because of economic hardship, domestic violence, trauma of war, or physical or emotional challenges. They have lost their health, safety, community, and capacity to support themselves. The children are young. They have witnessed violence in their families and on the streets; they are anxious, depressed, and withdrawn. Today, they need shelter. To build a life, they need a home and vital supports to keep them housed.

We know what families need to rebound from the economic, social, medical, and mental health problems that put them on the streets. We have identified strategies that work to prevent and end homelessness. We are sharing these solutions with providers on the frontlines. Along the way, we are telling the story of homelessness to policymakers and the public to create conditions to end this national tragedy.
